Hey, guess what? Not only does the government not require testing for Mad Cow in beef cattle, it wants to prevent companies from voluntarily testing. And a federal appeals court just ruled that they can.

There is no way in which this is not royally fucked up.

ETA: In the interests of clarity, I need to admit that I'm so pissed about this, I misphrased something in the initial post, and thus implied something I didn't intend to imply. It's not that no testing is being done. The FDA does a certain amount of testing, based on statistical samplings. I'm not claiming that the meat isn't safe. My problem here is the notion that the government has the right to tell private businesses that they can't do voluntary, additional testing, because, oh noes, it might provide a marketplace advantage that would require other companies to do the same.

Fuck a whole lot of that. This is exactly the sort of thing the government should not be involved in. Set up minimum safety requirements, yes. Educate people on why those requirements are sufficient, yes. Tell people they can't exceed said safety requirements. Blow me.
